The caique

The caique is the classic Turkish boat that originally was used to fishing
and as transport. Then, it was transformed in in a high confort boat for
nautical sport.
The wood stucture let the sailing navigation but the structural features
favour the motor propulsion reaching the cruise’s speed between
10/11 knots.
The big spaces offered by the caique don’t let a comparison with
the traditional sailing boats.At poops the area devoted to the lunch,
in the center a covered zone for the governement, the bar, the kitchen
and the stairs that bring to the doble cabins, eah of them with private
bathrooms.
The crew lodges in separate cabins. At prows there is a confortable sun
deck with pillows where it easy to get tanned. The lenght of the caiques
changes from 14 to 35 meters and the ideal measure is from 24 to 26 meters
with 6-8 cabins.
The original schooner has a rounded prow and its plan limits the numbers
of cabins. The ketch with the flat poop is nowadays more popular because
it lets to have superior internal places.
In the past the caiques were built only in Bodrum and the constructors
made up for the teachings of the most famous atchet’s teacher, Ziya
Guevendiren, who worked in Bodrum for all his life.
During the years the yards multiplied and many boats today are not more
built only in the coasts of Egeo, but also in the Mediterranean and in
the Black Sea near Instambul.
The construction process of a caique, that takes generally one year and
half, starts from the wood’s choice.
The most used wood is the pine’one that is cut during the summer
period because it has a superior quality.Even the oak wood is often used
for the hull because it has an extremely durability. The trend to build
during the years always bigger and more lecherous boats has brought the
use of the mahogany, imported from Africa and used also for the internal
spaces.
The construction’s costs of a caique can changes on the basis of
the quality’s tipe of the used woods.The cost goes from 200.000
USD to more than one million dollars.
A good maintenance can make a caique last even 30 years.
Every winter the boats are brought in the bank for the maintance’s
works and the costs can considerably change on the basis of the boat’s
type.
